I think they do tours, but I blamed Atlas for being ready to get the hell out of there. Honestly, I was too creeped out to even get out of the car. We stumbled on this place while looking for a place to eat lunch. I won’t get into the all background of all the crazy things that happened here, but this place is an old massive building made out of hand cut stone. In some middle of nowhere town called Weston, WV there is a creepy as hell place called the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. OK - we’re almost to the first high point, but I have to mention one more landmark we saw on the way. I definitely recommend this place – I think I remember someone from the visitor’s center telling me the bridge is the number one photographed place in West Virginia. Malcolm is terrified of heights so this was fun! We stopped and walked to the beautiful overlook and the visitor’s center here for some souvenirs. This bridge is the longest single span steel arch bridge in the United States and the New River sits 876 feet below. It must have been maybe an hour down the road on Highway 19 we found the New River Gorge Bridge in Victor, WV (just north of Fayettteville). We woke up early and had some coffee over the campfire, but it was freezing so we got back on the road rather quickly. There really is nothing quite like a star filled southern sky! After Atlas went to bed we sat by the fire for a while looking up at the beautiful stars. The fall colors were at peak perfection so even though it was a cold night to camp we could not have enjoyed the scenery more. We got back on the road and drove through the beautiful hills of West Virginia until we reached our stop for the night at Camp Creek State Park in Camp Creek, WV. Who knew! It is a super quiet place and most definitely not toddler friendly so our time here was really brief. There is a cool museum you can walk through and learn about her life and time as First Lady where she earned nicknames like “The Secret President” and “The First Woman President”. It turned out to be the birthplace of Edith Bolling Wilson, first lady to President Woodrow Wilson. Not sure about you, but we try to get off the interstate as much as we can when we do a leisurely trip like this – give me all the back roads! And when you take the back roads you stumble on places like Wytheville, VA – home of the biggest pencil in Virginia! I wouldn’t take a trip to Wytheville just for the pencil, but it was a nice place to stretch our legs. This trip took us from Chattanooga through Knoxville and Bristol to the country roads of Virginia. It was an unusually chilly Halloween weekend so we packed all our winter camping gear and hit the road. Also, I use Roadtrippers to plan all our road trips – highly recommend. ![]() These high points are all close together, so it makes sense to try to knock them all out in one trip. In late October 2019, we set out on another road trip with the goal of conquering three more high points: Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia.
